CALA SPALMATOIO

Cala Spalmatoio is one of only two bathing areas on the island freely accessible and is located in the north-east. It offers a mooring protected by winds and by storm surges.

Numerous archaeological finds, as mooring pillars and bollard rings (still partly visible), attest the massive exploitation of the port in ancient times. Its name "Spalmatoio" in fact derives from custom to spread tar on boats to make them waterproof. Roman engineers made cliff more regular, by cutting lateral rocks to allow the construction of the port. Remains of the stairs connecting the docks and wide open space on the bottom are still visible.

If you go scuba diving you can see bollards and mooring pillars on the sea floor, as well as the beautiful fauna and flora.
