THE TAROT GARDEN

The Tarot Garden is an artistic park located on the southern slope of the Garavicchio hill, almost 7 Km south-east of Capalbio. Wanted, designed and created in 1979 by the French artist, sculptress and painter, Niki de Saint Phalle. Born in the Ile de France in 1930 but mainly lived in the USA, Niki has built a Garden that is himself art. It contains, among esoteric paths and pop settings, twenty-two gigantic sculptures, some habitable, immersed in the green of the Maremma scrub, colored and inspired by the world of tarot. These works are the result of the genius of an artist who chose Capalbio and the Tuscan Maremma for her art.
Niki de Saint Phalle was flanked by a team of famous contemporary artists such as Rico Weber, Sepp Imhof, Paul Wiedmer, Dok van Winsen, Pierre Marie and Isabelle Le Jeune, Alan Davie, Marino Karella and especially by her husband Jean Tinguely.

The architect Mario Botta, in collaboration with architect Roberto Aureli, designed the entrance pavilion - a thick fence wall with only one large circular opening in the center, designed as a threshold that clearly divides the Garden from everyday reality.

The adventure, which began in 1979, thanks to the granting of land by Carlo and Nicola Caracciolo, ended only in 2002 with the death of Niki.
